May I have a word with you regarding Pepper? Journals may be more discreet, if you're suitably disposed.

8th December, early afternoon [Dec. 9th, 2008|09:14 am]
Alastor Gumboil died on the weekend.

Many of you are already aware of this, either through the investigation or from the very touching obituary in this morning's Prophet. However, I wished to make this announcement. Alastor not only served on my the magical law-enforcement squad for a number of years, he died giving his life for the capture of Mrs Pryce and her associates. He died as he lived: protecting the people of this country.

He died a hero, and this Wednesday he will be celebrated as one, with a full Ministry funeral.

[ooc: Yes, there's an official press release as well. During the yelling required to achieve this, Mill insisted on solid security at the funeral. She's declared if she sees anti-werewolf protesters, she'll hex them herself, and since that'll be a public relations nightmare, the security detail should make sure she doesn't see any. ;)]

5th December - late night [Dec. 6th, 2008|02:27 pm]
This evening, the Ministry's Werewolf Taskforce achieved a great victory for the safety, security and peace of mind of all of us. In conflict with members of You-Know-Who's rabble of malcontents, they captured three renegade werewolves, including one Tabitha Pryce. Mrs Pryce is one of three key criminals the Taskforce was formed to subdue; another, Fenrir Greyback, is of course already in Azkaban.

For press agents, a full and official statement will shortly be forthcoming from the usual source. However, I wanted to publicly, personally and fulsomely express my warmest congratulations to the members of the Taskforce for their work not just this evening, but in the weeks that have lead to it. Though the importance of their continuing task prevents me from naming them so that the public may also commend their defenders, I have no hesitation in declaring that they are all, without exception, heroes. I thank each and every one of them.

And to those of the so-called "dark army" who remain at large: don't worry, you'll be joining your fellows soon enough.

[OOC note: After posting this, Mill went down to the DMLE to congratulate in person such of the taskforce as were still there. She brought champagne, for those that aren't rushing off somewhere. *g*]

Thanks for the report. You've done well already, though obviously I need you to keep it up. I'm also going to need the name of this contact you mentioned, at least. It would be good to have a better idea of the extent of the Ministry overlap, in general if not in specifics. But stay inoffensive. If you can.

What sort of "proof" of usefulness and/or trustworthiness do you think they require?

Of all the stupid blithering useless
I don't have time for this. I don't have time to play twenty fucking questions with the fucking pearls and afternoon tea set. This isn't a fucking knitting circle, I'm trying to win a fucking WAR here
I don't even have time to be writing in this thing, even if there were something I could be writing that wouldn't be inappropriate in about three different ways. It was write or explode something (or someone) and wouldn't that look great on the front page of the Prophet?

A hundred people fucking died and still STILL they want me to TAKE TEA with the FUCKING LADIES Merlin give me FUCKING PATIENCE.

Right. If I've got to fucking do this, then I've got to fucking do this.

- Werewolf taskforce. Elle Abercrombie?
- Owl Guppy.

[Bartemius Crouch Snr]
I know it's too early for anything to be finalised, but I'd love to see a preliminary report on the Hogwarts attack as soon as you've got something ready.

Thank you to all of you who participated in last night's defense, both those who fought actively and those who held the lines so they could. The wizarding world is more in your debt than ever. I salute you.

2nd September, evening [Sep. 3rd, 2008|10:58 am]
- Poach Henry (seven gods, they call this a filing system?)
- Meet Mrs Thatcher (tonight?)
- Treasury review (AGAIN)
- Kill whoever put together the personnel system
- No, really. Get a time-turner. Kill them before they can institute this fucking debacle.
- Hang personnel committee from windows by trousers?
- Delegate personnel committee to one of the Assistants.
- Request review of safe-zone arrangements.
- Get the Assitants snazzy matching hats. Or a sense of humour
- Review notes on witches' brunch.
- There must be someone who can take over the werewolf taskforce.
- Get the decorators in before I start smoking a pipe and/or calling people "old chap"

Some kind fairy sent me champagne. Wasn't that nice? I just hope it cellars well, because at the moment the first space in my diary for drinking it appears to be 1983.

31st August, afternoon [Sep. 1st, 2008|08:30 am]
[The DMLE Squad - Hitwizards, trainees and support staff]
Mother of fucking Merlin I can't belie
I know how you all gossip (yes, Williams, I am especially looking at you) so this mightn't come as a surprise to all of you. But I wanted you boys to hear this from me, and not from the newspaper when I don't front for Monday briefing.

The Wizengamot has made a decision as to the next Minister. It's going to be me.

The decision to accept this position has not been an easy one. The squad has been my life for more than twenty years now, and I have never considered that anyone could aspire to a higher position than leading such a fine body of men and women. I could not be prouder of you all. And I know you will continue to do me proud as we fight - still together, though rather less directly - against the forces that would see the freedoms of wizarding Britain crushed.

They will not prevail.

Higgs will take the briefing in the morning. I will be coming past the office later in the afternoon, but I expect you will be all be working hard when I do.

I swear to Circe, I am holding you responsible for this. However it turns out.

Celebratory dinner at the Park tonight. More sort of a flabberghasted dinner, actually. I'll tell you why when you're here. And your father's going to Tashkent on Tuesday, so you should come down and say your goodbyes.

I'm in the office on a Sunday and you're not. What's wrong with this picture? Are you outrageously hungover, or taking that mythical thing referred to as a "day off"?

[Added some half hour later]
Pathkendle, on your early patrol tonight I want you and Hitchens to drop in on Flat 3B at 173 Camden High Street. Exercise extreme care, especially if anything looks out of place. If Pepper is there, you have my permission to give him a clip alongside the ear from me. If there's no answer or the premises look in any way disturbed, report back to me immediately.

Please not Pepper too.

I swear, they get younger every year. They stand there full of certainty in their own ability and all I can see is how easy they'd be to kill. They're giving me children and taking away my experienced officers and fuckdamn I need him sod it all. Merlin, this can't go on. We can't just hang on while they bleed us white. This can't go on.

There has to be another way.

Some of you may have heard by now - I know how you lot gossip - that Alastor Gumboil has been removed from the Squad. This is the result of circumstances beyond my fucking control, and indeed beyond his, and no reflection on his skills, abilities or actions. He was a damn good hitwizard, and he will be most sorely missed.

He will also not go unavenged, but none of you so much as lift a finger without my say-so, you understand? This is not negotiable.

Completely ridiculous. Anyone with a predefined code will be able to pass whatever information they please over these journals and be completely overlooked because they're being monitored. With all the assiduousness of candy floss. It's not as if we don't know there are leaks.

You really shouldn't get in another argument with Crouch right now, Bagnold.

Oh, fuck's sake.

I need all hands on deck right now, so if any of you have issues with this gag order, you're quite welcome to make your concerns known to me in a private manner. You are then welcome to shut the hell up and get your arse (and your journal) down to see Hopkirk. OR ELSE. Anyone planning on doing something stupid will be answering to me and I assure you my reprimand will not be written.

I feel so hollow. I'm running out of emotion. And whiskey. And patience. Are we just supposed to sit here, hands bound with inaction, while they pick us off for having the temerity to do our jobs? Every time I see a black armband I want to scream at someone. At Crouch, at Trimble. We should be taking the world apart, no fucking stone unturned, and stamping them out like the cockroaches they are. Why won't someone do something?

I've never before been glad I drove Kieran away that Kieran left, but I am now. Australia's safe. I wish I could convince Tabitha to join him, but Scotland will have to do. Surely she'll be safe with the Macfusties.

If any of us will be safe anywhere.

2nd June, morning [Jun. 2nd, 2008|01:18 pm]
The worst part of this job is having to leave my family to do it, when I don't know if said family will all still be there when I get back. But I do it, because even if I waited by my daughter's side in case her eyes opened, how could I face her having not done what I could? Even if "what I can" means only assisting others to safety. Giving them a chance to sit beside their loved ones.

Tabitha's fine. Ioan's fine. They've been discharged from St Mungos and returned to Macfusty.

So help me Circe, when I lay hands on whoever was responsible for this, they will not be fine.
